"Seal By Ledges", 48x48, oil on board, 1980s
"Salmon Pool", 2010, by Karen Anne Baldauski, NFS.  This is a masterful sumi-e, a Japanese word which means "ink painting". Karen's painting won the Founder's Award in an international competition at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto, Canada. This award was quite the surprise for Karen as it was her first-time entry into an international juried competition.

"Deerfield", serigraph, 46/50

"Violets", serigraph, 7/19 on linenweave, matted & framed

"Breaching Humpback Whale, Sunset" 16x20

"Clivia", roughly 30x22

A customer purchased this painting as a wedding gift for recent graduates of Maine Maritime in Castine.

"Taking A Nap", another artwork by Karen Anne Baldauski which demonstrates her love of "sumi-e", as she translates her work from traditional use of black ink on rice paper to many different media on various substrates.  Here, dilute oil paint is used as if it were watercolor.  Karen has a large collection of figure paintings/drawings accumulated over her lifetime.

The painter is also a felter.  Karen Anne Baldauski is seen here with her "Two Loons" felted wool and silk wall hanging that is stretched for drying against the post and beam building under construction. For her woolworks, Karen prefers to use all Maine wool if at all possible which she processes from roving which she hand dyes.

Albert Einstein:  "A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness."

Another inspiration: Miles Davis. Karen loves birdsong and jazz. At Princeton University she heard Miles Davis in live performance... never to be forgotten. MD: "Sometimes you have to play a long time before you can play like yourself."
